Academic Salaries Tribunal
1974 – 1987
Federal tribunal that determined the salaries of academic staff of Australian universities and colleges of advanced education after the Commonwealth took over full funding of higher education.
How it came into existence
Established in 1974 under the Remuneration Tribunals Act 1973 as amended in 1974, the Act that also governed the Remuneration Tribunal, after the Commonwealth assumed full responsibility for funding universities and colleges of advanced education from 1 January 1974. Academic salaries had earlier been set by arbitration boards or ad hoc inquiries; it had no predecessor body.
Legislation: Remuneration Tribunals Act 1973
How it ended
Abolished when academic salary fixing moved into the federal industrial arbitration system in the late 1980s. It was still dealing with salary matters in 1987; the year of abolition (taken as 1987) is uncertain.
