Aerial, Geological and Geophysical Survey of Northern Australia

AGGSNA

1935 – 1940

How it came into existence

Set up by the Commonwealth in 1935, with the cooperation of the Queensland and Western Australian governments, to stimulate mining in northern Australia; it built on the methods of the 1928–30 Imperial Geophysical Experimental Survey. It had no Commonwealth predecessor.

How it ended

Wound up around 1940, early in the Second World War; Commonwealth geological survey work was later re-formed in the wartime Mineral Resources Survey and, from 1946, the Bureau of Mineral Resources, Geology and Geophysics.

Main functions

  • Aerial photography of mineral fields
  • Geological mapping in northern Australia
  • Geophysical surveys for mineral deposits
