Australian Universities Quality Agency
AUQA
24 May 2000 – 2011
Independent not-for-profit company owned jointly by the Commonwealth, state and territory education ministers that audited and reported on quality assurance in Australian universities, other higher education institutions and the state and territory accreditation authorities.
How it came into existence
Agreed by the Ministerial Council on Education, Employment, Training and Youth Affairs (MCEETYA) in March 2000 and registered as a company limited by guarantee on 24 May 2000, with the Commonwealth, state and territory education ministers as its members. It had no Commonwealth predecessor body; the earlier national quality reviews of 1993–95 had been run by an advisory committee, the Committee for Quality Assurance in Higher Education.
Legislation: None (company limited by guarantee under the Corporations Law, later the Corporations Act 2001)
How it ended
Dissolved in 2011, with its operations closing by January 2012, as its quality assurance role passed to the Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency, established on 30 July 2011, which took on former AUQA staff.
