Central Wool Committee

November 1916 – 1921

First World War body that controlled the appraisal, handling and sale of the Australian wool clip under the Imperial purchase scheme, by which the British Government bought the whole clip for the duration of the war and one season after.

How it came into existence

Set up in November 1916 under War Precautions (Wool) Regulations, after the Commonwealth agreed to sell the entire Australian wool clip to the British Government. It worked through the wool-selling brokers and appointed appraisers and had no Commonwealth predecessor.

Legislation: War Precautions Act 1914 (War Precautions (Wool) Regulations)

How it ended

Wound up after the Imperial purchase scheme ended; the unsold stocks of Australian wool were taken over in 1921 by the British Australian Wool Realisation Association (BAWRA), a grower-owned company formed to dispose of them.

Main functions

  • Administration of the Imperial wool purchase scheme in Australia
  • Appraisal of wool for sale to the British Government
  • Control of wool handling, storage and shipment
  • Payment of growers for appraised wool
