Christmas Island Services Corporation

1985 – 1 July 1992

Commonwealth statutory corporation that provided municipal and community services on Christmas Island from the mid-1980s until Western Australian-style local government was introduced in 1992.

How it came into existence

Set up by Christmas Island ordinance in the mid-1980s, under the Commonwealth policy of bringing the territory's services and representation into line with the mainland, to take over local community services from the territory administration; the elected Christmas Island Assembly, first elected in 1985, was associated with it. The instrument and the corporation's exact start date are not confirmed.

Changes during its life

  1. 24 July 1987Responsibility for Christmas Island passed from the Department of Territories to the Department of the Arts, Sport, the Environment, Tourism and Territories.
  2. 27 December 1991Responsibility passed to the Department of the Arts, Sport, the Environment and Territories when tourism left the portfolio.

How it ended

Became the local government of the island on 1 July 1992, when the Shire of Christmas Island, a council with the powers of a Western Australian shire, was set up under the reforms that applied Western Australian law to the territory under the Territories Law Reform Act 1992. The Shire is a local government, not a Commonwealth body.
