Commonwealth Harness, Saddlery and Leather Accoutrements Factory
Commonwealth Harness Factory · Commonwealth Saddlery Factory
September 1911 – 1929
Government factory in Groom Street, Clifton Hill, Melbourne, that made harness, saddlery and leather equipment for the Australian military forces.
How it came into existence
Set up by the Department of Defence, which bought and took over the former Roseneath factory building at the corner of Groom and Roseneath Streets, Clifton Hill, in September 1911, to make harness and webbing for military forces that still relied on horse transport. It was one of the Commonwealth factories established under the policy of local manufacture of defence supplies, and a new undertaking rather than a transfer from another body.
- Supply of harness, saddlery and leather equipment
Changes during its life
- 1921Placed with the other government defence factories under the control of the new Munitions Supply Board.
How it ended
Ceased operating as a Defence factory in the late 1920s; by the 1930s the building housed a boot factory and later other private manufacturers. The year 1929 is an estimate resting on a property and heritage account that Defence occupancy of the building lasted until the late 1920s; the exact closure date, and whether its work passed to another Commonwealth factory, are not confirmed.
Main functions
- Manufacture of harness and saddlery for the Army
- Manufacture of leather accoutrements and equipment
Where it sits
