How it came into existence
Formed within the Department of Defence on 8 November 2000 under a Cabinet directive, merging the Australian Imagery Organisation with the Directorate of Strategic Military Geographic Information and the Defence Topographic Agency.

Changes during its life
- 2 December 2005Its functions were set out in section 6B of the Intelligence Services Act 2001, inserted by the Intelligence Services Legislation Amendment Act 2005, bringing it under the Act and the oversight of the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Intelligence and Security.
How it ended
Renamed the Australian Geospatial-Intelligence Organisation in May 2013, alongside the renaming of the Defence Signals Directorate, at the release of the 2013 Defence White Paper.
