Department of Education and Science

13 December 1966 – 19 December 1972

The first Commonwealth Department of State for education and science, responsible for universities and colleges of advanced education, Commonwealth scholarships, education in the territories, CSIRO and science policy.

How it came into existence

Created on 13 December 1966 by the Administrative Arrangements Order for the second Holt ministry, with John Gorton as its first minister. It took the Education Division, CSIRO, the Australian Universities Commission and the Australian National University from the Prime Minister's Department, absorbed the Commonwealth Office of Education, and took education in the Australian Capital Territory and Jervis Bay from the Department of the Interior and education in the Northern Territory from the Department of Territories.

How it ended

Abolished on 19 December 1972 by the Whitlam government and split in two: education went to the new Department of Education and science to the new Department of Science.
