Renamed Department of National Development and Energy in 1979.
Department of State responsible for energy policy, water resources and electricity, geological survey and national mapping, and decentralisation and regional development; from December 1978 it also handled local government and urban development.

How it came into existence
Created by the Administrative Arrangements Order of 20 December 1977, with Kevin Newman as Minister for National Development. It took energy, water, geological survey and mapping functions from the abolished Department of National Resources and decentralisation from the Department of Environment, Housing and Community Development, from which it also gained local government, urban development and soil conservation grants when that department was abolished on 5 December 1978.
