Department of Special Trade Representations
20 December 1977 – 3 November 1980
Small Department of State that supported the Minister for Special Trade Representations in special trade negotiations and representations to Australia's major trading partners, particularly on market access for Australian agricultural exports.
How it came into existence
Created with the third Fraser ministry, sworn in on 20 December 1977 (the date is taken from the ministry; the order itself has not been seen), alongside the new Department of Trade and Resources. It carried on the special trade negotiations that John Howard had conducted as Minister for Special Trade Negotiations in the second half of 1977. Its ministers were Victor Garland (to December 1979), Douglas Scott (to August 1980) and Ian Sinclair; Jim Scully, Secretary of the Department of Trade and Resources, was also its head.

Inferred: in 1977 special trade negotiations were conducted within the trade portfolio by John Howard as Minister for Special Trade Negotiations.
How it ended
Abolished on 3 November 1980, when the fourth Fraser ministry cut the number of departments by two (Special Trade Representations and Productivity); its work was taken over by the Department of Trade and Resources.
