Inter-State Commission
1983 – 9 March 1990
Revived constitutional commission that investigated interstate transport and trade, including the cost recovery arrangements for interstate land transport and the efficiency of the waterfront.
How it came into existence
Re-established in 1983 under the Inter-State Commission Act 1975, legislation passed by the Whitlam government but brought into operation only after the 1983 change of government. The original commission's Act of 1912 had been repealed in 1950, so there was no legal continuity with the commission of 1913 to 1920.
- Inquiries into interstate trade and commerce under section 101 of the Constitution
Revival of the constitutional commission after it had lapsed in 1920; no legal continuity.
Legislation: Inter-State Commission Act 1975
Changes during its life

Ceased on 9 March 1990, when its interstate transport and trade inquiry functions passed to the new Industry Commission under the Industry Commission Act 1989 (assented to on 17 January 1990), which repealed parts of the 1975 Act.
