Metric Conversion Board
1970 – 1981
Statutory board that planned, co-ordinated and promoted Australia's conversion from imperial to metric units of measurement across industry, government and the community.
How it came into existence
Established under the Metric Conversion Act 1970 (assented to on 12 June 1970), whose purpose was to set up a board to bring about the progressive adoption of the metric system of measurement in Australia. Active conversion under the board began in 1971. The exact date the board was constituted is not confirmed.
Legislation: Metric Conversion Act 1970
How it ended
Dissolved in 1981, when conversion was considered substantially complete; its final annual report, for 1980–81, put Australia at over 90 per cent metricated. Responsibility for completing the conversion passed to the National Standards Commission, which held it from 1981 to 1988. The exact date of dissolution is not confirmed.
