Royal Commission on Alleged Payments to Maritime Unions

Royal Commission into alleged payments to maritime unions · Royal Commission into Allegations concerning some Australian Maritime Unions

5 September 1974 – 25 May 1976

Royal commission conducted by Justice John Sweeney into allegations that payments had been demanded by or made to certain maritime unions.

How it came into existence

Appointed by the Governor-General in Executive Council in early September 1974 (announced by Prime Minister Gough Whitlam on 5 September 1974), after the Departments of Transport and of Labor and Immigration had investigated reports of the demands. Justice John Bernard Sweeney of the Australian Industrial Court was Royal Commissioner. It was to inquire whether payments other than those of a normal kind had been demanded by or made to maritime unions or their officials, and related matters. Hearings were under way by mid-September 1974.

How it ended

Reported in 1976 (year from the list of royal commissions; the date and findings of the report were not confirmed). The Parliamentary Handbook gives 25 May 1976 as the date the final report was presented.
