Royal Commission on Food Supplies and Trade and Industry during the War
Royal Commission on food supplies and trade and industry during the war · Food Supplies Commission · Foodstuffs Commission
31 August 1914 – 16 December 1914
An early wartime inquiry into the supply of foodstuffs and other necessaries in Australia, the quantities available for export, and conditions of trade and industry arising from the war.
How it came into existence
Appointed by Letters Patent dated 31 August 1914 by the Cook government, shortly after the outbreak of war. The commissioners were Alfred Deakin, Dugald Thomson and the Commonwealth Statistician George Knibbs. They were to report from time to time on food and other necessaries, the amounts available for export, and trade and industry matters arising from the war.
How it ended
The Fisher government terminated the commission in November 1914 (between 12 and 27 November) before it had finished its inquiries. Its reports and recommendations were laid before Parliament on 16 December 1914. The Parliamentary Handbook gives 16 December 1914 as the date the final report was presented.
