Royal Commission to inquire into and report upon certain transactions of the Sydney Land Sales Control Office, and the Canberra Land Sales Control Office of the Treasury (1947) · Land Sales Royal Commission

13 June 1947 – 25 September 1947

Royal commission into the administration of wartime land sales control by the Sydney and Canberra offices of the Treasury, after allegations that consents to sell land above pegged valuations had been improperly given.

How it came into existence

In May 1947 Smith's Weekly alleged that the Sydney Land Sales Control office had approved sales above the pegged valuations, including transactions of Subdivision Estates and Land Pty Ltd, whose managing director was S. E. Parry MLC. Treasurer Ben Chifley told the House on 15 May 1947 that there had been serious departures from procedure in that company's transactions and that the administration of the office had been changed. A royal commission followed in 1947; contemporary press reports name Judge Richard Kirby as the commissioner. The Letters Patent are dated 13 June 1947.

How it ended

The commission reported in 1947 on the administration of the Sydney office; its findings and the report date were not found in the sources consulted, and the dates rest on the list of royal commissions. The Parliamentary Handbook gives 25 September 1947 as the date the final report was presented.
