War Service Homes Commission
War Service Homes
March 1919 – 1947
Commission headed by the War Service Homes Commissioner that built, bought and financed homes for returned servicemen and their dependants through low-interest loans under the War Service Homes Act 1918.
How it came into existence
Set up in March 1919 to administer the War Service Homes Act 1918, which provided for a War Service Homes Commissioner to build, buy and lend for homes for returned soldiers. It sat within the Repatriation Department, with the Commissioner reporting directly to the Minister for Repatriation; the function was new to the Commonwealth.
Legislation: War Service Homes Act 1918
How it ended
The separate commission is believed to have ceased around 1947 (the year is not confirmed), after which the scheme was run by a War Service Homes Division of a Commonwealth department. The scheme later continued as Defence Service Homes, whose mortgage portfolio was sold to Westpac in 1988.
Main functions
- Housing loans for returned servicemen
- Construction and purchase of homes
- Management of mortgages and repayments
