Department of External Territories

How it came into existence
Created on 26 June 1941 by an Administrative Arrangements Order made during the third Menzies ministry. Changes during its life

How it ended
Abolished on 11 May 1951 when the fifth Menzies ministry took office; its territories passed to the new Department of Territories under Paul Hasluck, which also took over the Northern Territory from the Department of the Interior.

The 1951 order abolished the Department of External Territories and established the Department of Territories with wider functions; it is sometimes described simply as a renaming.
