Department of Housing and Construction
11 March 1983 – 24 July 1987
Department of State responsible for Commonwealth housing policy and housing assistance, the building industry, and the planning, construction and maintenance of Commonwealth works and buildings.
How it came into existence
Created by the Administrative Arrangements Order of 11 March 1983, when the incoming Hawke government split the Department of Transport and Construction. It took Commonwealth construction and works from that department, the Housing Policy Division and the home savings grant and home deposit assistance schemes from the Department of Social Security, and building industry matters from the Department of Industry and Commerce.
