Names over time

How it came into existence

Created by the Administrative Arrangements Order of 7 May 1982, replacing the first Department of Industry and Commerce (whose defence factories went to the new Department of Defence Support). It also took customs, excise and bounties from the abolished Department of Business and Consumer Affairs and building industry matters from the abolished Department of Housing and Construction. Phillip Lynch continued as minister until October 1982, followed by Andrew Peacock and, from March 1983, John Button.

Changes during its life

How it ended

Renamed the Department of Industry, Technology and Commerce on 13 December 1984, when it took over technology functions from the Department of Science and Technology. Tourism and building industry matters had already gone on 11 March 1983 to the Department of Sport, Recreation and Tourism and the Department of Housing and Construction.
